What to decide before you order
Flyer and brochure work is decided by weight and fold. A handout that goes into a mailer can be 130 GSM art paper. A brochure a customer keeps belongs at 150 to 170 GSM, where the sheet holds a crease without cracking and reads as a document rather than a throwaway.
Binding decides the page count. Saddle-stitch, two wire staples through the spine, is the practical answer for thinner booklets. Wire-O opens flat, which is what a customer wants in a catalog laid on a desk. And varnish is not decoration: an aqueous sealer stops ink rub-off when pieces ship stacked in cartons.
How this family runs on our floor
Brochure folding is a machine operation, and the score comes first. A tri-fold is creased before it is folded, so the fiber breaks along the line instead of cracking. On coated paper folded without scoring, the crack runs right through the color on the spine.
Booklet work prints in signatures, collates, then binds. Saddle-stitch and Wire-O run on different machines, and Wire-O is slower because the wire is cut, threaded, and closed on the machine. Give us the page count and we will tell you which binding is cheaper.
What the spec actually means
Art paper is coated, which is why it prints sharper than uncoated bond. The coating holds the ink at the surface instead of letting it wick into the fiber, so small text stays crisp and half-tone images stay clean. That is what makes 130 to 170 GSM art paper the default for multi-color layouts.
Machine scoring leaves a visible crease line before the fold. It is why a machine-folded brochure has a crisp spine and a hand-folded one has a soft, wavy one. We check the fold direction against the artwork so the panels read in the order you designed them.
