An embossed card is meant to be felt as much as read. So the board has to be thick enough to take a deep impression, and soft enough not to crack under it. This one is 400 GSM cotton, with a blind emboss and letterpress type.
What this specification does on press
- 400 GSM cotton board is a rag-based sheet, not a wood-pulp one. Cotton fibres compress under pressure and recover, which is exactly what a deep impression needs. A coated board at the same weight would crack.
- A blind emboss is a mark pressed into the board with no ink at all. It reads as a shadow that moves with the light. For a practice whose vocabulary is drawings and materials, that is the whole point.
- Letterpress presses the type into the sheet with ink, so you get a visible deboss beside the printed mark. It is the opposite of offset, which prints on the surface and displaces nothing.
- 3.25″ × 2.0″ is the narrower of the two Bangladeshi standard card sizes, and the format that suits a restrained, type-led card.
Decisions to make before you order
- Embossing dies are made to the artwork and charged once. Pay for the proof. Re-cutting a die and re-running the sheet is the expensive way to learn an impression is too deep.
- A blind emboss is invisible in a photograph. If the card will be shown online, build in an inked element as well.
- Cotton board is uncoated, so ink dries into it rather than sitting on it. The printed colour will read slightly softer than a proof on coated stock. That is the material, not a press fault.
