A race bib gets worn, sweated on, rained on and then kept. It is one of the few printed objects that has to survive being on a person, so nearly the whole specification is about the substrate.
What this specification does on press
- Synthetic tear-proof Tyvek is a spun-bonded polyethylene, and it cannot be torn by hand. A bib that is pinned, pulled and sweated on stays in one piece for the full race.
- Waterproof ink is a requirement, not an upgrade. Standard water-based ink runs in the first shower or the first pour at a water station, and it takes the number with it.
- Variable numbering means every sheet carries a different number from the same run. The sequence is set in prepress, so the bibs come off the press in order and can be handed out in order.
- Four safety pins, two at each shoulder, is the attachment standard. Pin a bib at only two corners and it flaps, obscuring the number at the finish line.
Decisions to make before you order
- Fix the numbering sequence and the start list together. Last-minute entries after the run is printed are a manual problem, not a print one.
- Check the emergency-contact line and the sponsor logos against the pin positions. A pin through a phone number defeats the purpose of printing it.
- Order spares above the registered count. Race-day registration always adds runners, and a second run of a variable-data job costs close to the first.
