Food packaging is specified backwards. The substrate is the regulation and the decoration comes second. This is a food-grade kraft carton, printed in one colour and creased flat, so the cartons arrive at the packing bench ready to be folded by hand.
What this specification does on press
- 250 GSM food-safe kraft is a sheet certified for direct contact with dry food. That certificate is the constraint. It rules out certain coatings and heavy ink coverage on the inside of the carton.
- One-colour, flexo-friendly artwork is built for a low plate count. Flexo lays ink onto a moving web, so it handles large solid areas and bold type well and punishes fine reverses and photographic gradients.
- A custom die-cut carton means the shape, the glue tabs and the creases all live in one die. The cartons ship flat and are folded by hand at the client’s end.
- Crease-and-fold-ready means the crease lines are pressed at the press, not scored afterwards. A badly creased kraft carton splits along the fold, and that is the failure mode this spec exists to avoid.
Decisions to make before you order
- Get the food-contact confirmation in writing before approving the stock. “Kraft-coloured” and “food-safe kraft” are different products, and the price difference is not large.
- Design within one or two ink channels. A third colour on a flexo run means a third plate, a third wash-down and a third of the setup cost.
- Give us the flat-packed shipping dimensions. Erected cartons ship mostly air, and paying freight on air is the hidden cost in a packaging run.
