An exhibition catalogue has to do two things that pull against each other. Reproduce the artwork as faithfully as the process allows, and survive being carried round a gallery and taken home.
What this specification does on press
- 170 GSM silk text is a coated sheet with a low-sheen finish, and it is the sheet for art reproduction. The coating holds the ink dot so the colours stay saturated, and the low sheen means the page does not glare under gallery lighting.
- A 300 GSM cover in the same silk family gives the catalogue a spine and a shelf presence a self-cover booklet cannot match. The text block is protected at the edges instead of being exposed.
- Perfect binding glues the folded sections to the cover at the spine, giving a flat square spine that takes a printed title. It is the binding that scales past the page limit of a saddle-stitched booklet.
- A matte cover with a spot UV title puts a single high-gloss element on a flat field. The same tone-on-tone logic as a varnished folder, applied to a book that will actually be picked up.
Decisions to make before you order
- Decide the reproduction standard before the file is made. Printing from RGB screen files onto coated stock shifts the greys. Correcting it in prepress is free. Correcting it on press is not.
- Check the page count is a multiple of four, and for perfect binding a multiple of the section size. The cover is glued to the whole spine, so short books give a weak bind.
- Keep the spot UV to a solid, simple mark. Fine letterforms at small sizes will fill in under the varnish.
